Applicable Job Description Associate Director for Sports is a
senior level management position in the Syracuse University
Recreation unit responsible for leadership, development and
management of the Sport Club and Intramural Sports programs. The
Sport Club program consists of 50 competitive, instructional and
recreational clubs with over 1,500 participants. The Intramural
Sports program includes 24 sports activities and has over 2,800
participants. The Sports work group consists of (3) full time staff
and 60 student staff. Associate Director directly supervise (2)
full time staff members and manages an operating budget of
$350,000. Associate Director for Sports establishes, coordinates
and implements appropriate risk management and compliance plans for
all Sports programs. Innovative, quality programming is critical to
the success of the Barnes Center at The Arch operations.
Qualifications Master's degree in Recreation, Physical Education,
Sports Management or related field. Minimum 5 years experience
working in college/university recreation or related field.
Experience managing Sport Club and Intramural Sports programs.
Minimum 5 years experience developing and supervising student
staff. Job Specific Qualifications Demonstrated history of
supervising staff from diverse identity backgrounds. Sports
officiating experience. Demonstrated ability to assess and promote
inclusive club and intramural sport programs. Experience with
managing the operations of multiple program areas. Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent planning and
organization skills. Excellent team work skills. Responsibilities
Provides overall direction and supervision of Sport Club program.
Plan and direct required semester training sessions for club
officers, participants and coaches relating to University policies
and Sport Club program rules. Responsible for managing annual
mandatory anti-discrimination and harassments training, including
Title IX training with other campus partners. Provides supervision,
leadership and direction to (2) fulltime staff members, (1) Student
Program Assistant, (5) student supervisors and the Sport Club
Council. Coordinates and provides onsite supervision of Sport Club
practices and competitions. Reviews and updates Sport Club policies
and procedures. Assists with organizational meetings for new clubs.
Manages web based Sport Club administration program. Interviews,
trains and approves Sport Club coaches. Resolves sportsmanship
issues and violations of program policies. Implements appropriate
risk management plans for program operations. Coordinates Emergency
Action Plans. Enforces policies and procedures relating to Sport
Club participation. Maintains accurate club rosters and training
records. Verifies participant eligibility. Manages club scheduling,
travel and event management. Provides overall direction and
supervision to Intramural Sports program. Directs training and
development of (1) fulltime staff member and 50 officials and
supervisors. Plans overall schedule of Intramural activities and
explores new programming opportunities to increase participation
and involvement. Plans, develops, teaches and leads officials
training clinics. Develops, reviews, revises and enforces policies
and procedures relating to Intramural Sports program operations and
participation. Ensures that programs are operating within
departmental and university guidelines. Coordinates and provides
onsite supervision of Intramural Sports programs. Establish,
coordinate and implement comprehensive risk management plans for
all program areas. Manage Athletic Training contract and manage
procedures relating to concussion polices for sports programs.
Schedule Athletic Trainers for competitions and practices for high
risk sports. Arrange for Athletic training access for all sports
participants. Serve on department Risk Management Committee.
Develop, review, revise and enforce policies and procedures
relating to program participation. Through regular visitations and
audits, position evaluates and monitors risk management and policy
compliance for all sports activities. Evaluate effectiveness of
programs on an ongoing basis, using appropriate assessment tools,
such as surveys, program evaluation forms, and staff summaries.
Collect data relating to program operations, participation and
participant satisfaction and learning. Utilize feedback to inform
future priorities, enhancements, and initiatives which respond to
the changing needs of students and the University. Develop and
manage program operating budget of over $350,000 in accordance with
university and departmental policies. Accurately forecast, track
and record program expenditures. Oversee club budget allocation
process. Purchase, maintain and inventory program equipment. Ensure
payroll activities for Sports work unit are performed accurately,
timely and in accordance with university policies. Physical
