Job Description Job Description Job Title: Shipping and Receiving Yard Manager Location: West Chicago, Illinois Company: Precast Concrete Manufacturing Facility Position Summary The Yard Manager is responsible for overseeing all yard operations, including shipping, receiving, product staging, inventory control, equipment coordination, and overall yard organization. This role ensures safe, efficient movement of precast products and materials while maintaining clear communication with production, dispatch, and drivers to support on-time deliveries and plant operations. Key Responsibilities Shipping & Receiving - Oversee all outbound shipments of precast products - Coordinate load scheduling with dispatch and production teams - Verify load accuracy against packing slips, shop drawings, and delivery tickets - Supervise secure and proper loading of trucks - Inspect outgoing loads for quality and damage prior to shipment - Manage all inbound deliveries (raw materials, supplies, equipment) - Verify received quantities and inspect for damage - Maintain accurate shipping and receiving documentation Yard Management & Organization - Maintain organized staging areas for finished goods - Establish and enforce yard layout for efficient product flow - Track inventory locations and maintain yard maps as needed - Ensure clear access lanes for trucks, forklifts, and heavy equipment - Monitor yard cleanliness and housekeeping standards - Coordinate product storage to prevent damage Supervision & Coordination - Supervise yard personnel, forklift operators, and loaders - Assign daily tasks and monitor productivity - Enforce safety protocols and proper rigging practices - Coordinate closely with plant management and production teams - Communicate delivery priorities and changes to yard staff Safety & Compliance - Enforce OSHA and company safety standards - Conduct equipment inspections and ensure proper use of lifting gear - Maintain safe loading, unloading, and traffic flow procedures - Participate in safety meetings and incident reporting Qualifications - 3 years of experience in yard operations, shipping/receiving, or industrial logistics - Experience in construction materials, precast concrete, or heavy manufacturing preferred - Strong understanding of load securement and material handling - Forklift and heavy equipment experience - Ability to read shop drawings and shipping documentation - Supervisory experience preferred - Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational ability - Solid working knowledge of computers, including spreadsheets, inventory systems, and digital documentation - Demonstrated ability to organize, track, and compile operational data accurately Skills - Strong organizational and leadership abilities - Effective communication with drivers and plant personnel - Ability to prioritize multiple shipments and deadlines - Attention to detail and accountability - Problem-solving under time-sensitive conditions Work Environment - Outdoor industrial yard environment - Exposure to weather, heavy equipment, and large precast products - Requires standing, walking, climbing, and lifting Compensation - Competitive salary based on experience - Overtime opportunities as required - Benefits package (health insurance, PTO, etc.) This position is critical to ensuring organized yard operations, accurate shipping and receiving, and on-time project deliveries.
