Job Description:
CERTIFIED HEMODIALYSIS TECHNICIAN Reports to the Manager.
Performs direct patient care which includes performance of basic
hemodialysis techniques and procedures, daily patient care and
observations under the direct supervision and guidance of a
registered nurse. Specific tasks to be performed are determined
based upon patient care unit assignment and may include some or all

team. Job Responsibility Performs patient care services by:
Provides direct patient care including performing patient treatment
from start to finish and handling daily operations between patient
and dialysis machine. Responds to machine alarms according to
established procedures. Performs dialysis required laboratory
procedures and quality control which include but not limited to
specimen collection, blood sugar testing, and proper labeling of
the specimen collected. Monitors patient status, including vital
signs, and documents. Participates in patient care treatments and
procedures by: Documents all activities and care delivered to the
patient, in the EMR, according to established protocols.
Communicates with the RN regarding patient status, interventions
completed, data collected, any abnormal findings specific to vital
signs or procedural set ups. Responds to emergency situations with
appropriate treatment as directed by the RN. Follows established
safety and emergency policies and procedures in daily practice or
emergency situations including handling of equipment and supplies
during emergencies. Supports the patient care unit by: Responsible
for basic water testing-related tasks Assists in the patient
discharge and transfer practices, as directed by the RN, including
but not limited to: gathering patient belongings and transporting
patient to other rooms or transportation vehicle, amongst others.
Ensures stocking of all supplies and equipment is done daily and as
needed, and also assists with answering the telephone. Supports
patient advocacy, patient rights and responsibilities and service
standards. Performs other functions to maintain personal competence
and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Associate complies with the
following organizational requirements: Attends and participates in
department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department
specific education within established timeframes. Completes annual
employee health requirements within established timeframes.
Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing
throughout fiscal year. Direct patient care providers are required
to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required
by position/department. Consistently utilizes appropriate universal
precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to
protect patient and self. Adheres to regulatory agency
requirements, survey process and compliance. Complies with
established organization and department policies. Available to work
overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and

continuously. Job Qualifications Education and Experience The
knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally
acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma
and certification as a Dialysis Technician One (1) year recent
experience as a Dialysis Technician preferred. A minimum of one
year experience in a healthcare setting preferred. Knowledge &
Skills Demonstrates ability to read, legibly print or write,
correctly spell medical and non-medical terms and understand and
follow verbal and written instructions. Requires an understanding
of medical terminology. Demonstrates math skills necessary to add,
subtract, multiply, divide, use fractions and calculate percentages
(for example, weigh patients and take pulses, respirations, etc.).
Demonstrates communication and interpersonal skills necessary to
interact effectively with patients, visitors and co-workers and to
maintain positive working relationships. Requires proficiency in
basic computer skills and sufficient keyboarding skills to complete
the work assigned accurately and in a reasonable amount of time.
Requires the ability to work independently, take initiative and be
self-motivated. Maintain BLS certification. Maintain dialysis
technician certification recognized by the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Working Conditions . Works in a patient care environment
requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands,
certain undesirable patient care activities and possible exposure
to bio-hazards. Requires an understanding of the need to be
responsive and reasonably adaptable due to extenuating
circumstances in support of associates and department functions.
Physical Demands Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to
walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up
to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds
unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.)
